CHAPTER FOCUS

The Klein chapter of PEAC, Bearkat Mentors, first started in the fall semester of 2017 with a focus on mentoring struggling middle school students. Since then, they have held many tutoring sessions, math club meetings, extra help sessions, and demos to help the students at Kleb Intermediate. The Bearkats main focus this semester is to engage Kleb students through an online platform by transitioning mentorship online by hosting panels and online tutoring sessions. In addition, they are also hosting Klein High alumni college help panels to help high schoolers in the college application process.

PROJECTS

COLLEGE AND CAREER SERIES PANELS

In order to continue having panels for students, our team had the idea to team up with the college and career center to have college application help with teachers and college students leading. Especially with the remote atmosphere at the moment for most students, these zoom panels can help alleviate the pressure around college applications. In addition, we also plan on having successful Klein Alumni panels explaining their story and tips for adult life and college. This event could happen in person or virtually.

PASSION PIECES

Project Passion Pieces originates from PEAC Cougar Tutors at the University of Houston. The intent behind their video pieces is to share their personal interest with their students during this time of quarantine. Our version of Passion Pieces takes a different perspective on this innovative idea. Each Bearkat Mentor will create an educational video of their choice topic to share with their students. These videos serve for students to explore new pastimes, understand different areas of study, and further their academic education through remote teaching.

ZOOM TUTORING

In order to continue tutoring sessions, the Klein chapter of PEAC has brainstormed ideas to do so over Zoom. One of our ideas is to use breakout rooms, a Zoom function that allows participants to be split into multiple rooms, to reduce chaos and keep our tutoring organized. For example, there can be a breakout room for students who need help with factoring and another one for students who are struggling with graphing. We also plan to play interactive games with students and create resource libraries to supplement their classroom teachings throughout the year.
